I’m Zara Simon-Ogan, known as EfikZara: an author, natural hair educator, professional violinist, composer, and creative entrepreneur. I bring the same care to a haircare formula that I bring to a piece of music: attention to the details, curiosity about how things work, and a desire to make something meaningful.

Why I create
Understanding changes the way you care.
My natural hair journey began with a change of mind. After a damaging relaxer experience, I went looking for answers and discovered women embracing their natural texture. I realized I wanted to do the same. My last relaxer was in 2008; the learning, experimenting, and rediscovering my own hair grew from there.
What started as a personal interest became something I shared on YouTube. I knew how much it meant to see someone else’s journey, and I wanted to pass that encouragement on.
My work brings the learning and the making together. Through illustrated explanations, ingredient guidance, and carefully laid-out recipes, I want to help you move from collecting ideas to understanding what you’re doing—and enjoying the process.

Some of my most widely shared recipes have reached over one million people through YouTube and have been shared, made, and remade tens of thousands of times. My books give that learning a place to live: guidance you can open, study, and return to at your own pace.

Beyond the books
There’s always an artist in the room.
Music is central to my life. I’m a classically trained professional violinist and composer. I studied violin performance and music composition at West Virginia University, then earned my master’s degree in music composition at the Mannes School in New York City.
I also work across photography, retouching, cinematography, video editing, and design. I love shaping a visual world: the light, the color, the texture, and the little details that make you stop and look again. My own photographs and retouching are part of that expression, including the portraits you see here.
That creative eye runs through my work as an author and business owner, too. I’ve designed resources including my Holy Grail, Extreme Hair Growth Calendar, and Haircare Planner, and I bring that same attention to the experience of this website. For me, learning and beauty belong together.
